GRP Lining for Electroplating Tanks, Sharjah

Project Overview

Client: Al Maha Metal Bldg. Const. Ind LLC
Location: Sunrise Metal Industries, Industrial Area 15, Sharjah, UAE.
Contact Person: Mr. Karthikeyan (Manager)
Start Date: 05 Feb 2025
End Date: 02 March 2025
Area: 576 m2 (6 Electroplating Tanks)

This project involved applying a 6mm thick GRP lining with vinyl ester resin inside electroplating tanks. The external surfaces of the tanks were coated with standard GRP and finished with a white gel coat to protect against corrosion and ensure durability.

Findings

  • The interior surface of the tanks was heavily rusted due to the galvanized iron material.
  • Significant grinding and surface preparation were necessary before the GRP application to achieve a strong bond.
  • A flawless 6mm thickness was critical inside the tanks to prevent pinholes, which could pose a risk during the electroplating process.
  • The external surfaces had uneven areas and joint overlaps that made the GRP application more challenging.

Risks

  • Confined space work presented low oxygen levels, requiring proper ventilation and gas monitoring equipment.
  • All team members were trained in confined space safety protocols.
  • The resin and gel coat materials were hazardous; therefore, workers used full PPE, including safety goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, boots, and helmets.

Solution

  • The technical team recommended thorough grinding and sandblasting to remove all rust and ensure proper adhesion.
  • The interior walls and floor were successfully laminated using vinyl ester GRP.
  • External surfaces were coated with GP resin and finished with a white gel coat.
